My Promise

I’ve thought about this for a while now. I believe my future is in marketing and a cross over into basketball. My goal is to get Nike, Adidas, Converse, Reebok, or any sneaker company to release a show called the “Brrrt”. No jokes. Rod Benson has his Boom Tho movement, I’m going to start the Brrrt movement.

For those of you that don’t know about Brrrt, basically it can mean anything and everything, but generally it’s used in a positive connotation. For example, if you see a pretty girl (or guy) you could say “brrrrt”. But be sure to roll your r’s. Or if you see a nice play in basketball game, again you can say “brrrt”. Also, you can hold the “r” sound longer to emphasize your brrrt.

I can already see it happening. The next generation of NBA stars dunking on people or hitting 3′s with a hand in their face and calling out “BRRRRRRRRRT!!” while wearing the new Nike Air Brrrt.

Really, I just want to start taking my blog in a “new direction”, I just thought the Spanish translation sounded cooler. I want to write a bit more. Express myself. For those of you that know me, I’m generally a pretty quiet guy, so instead of forcing my ideas and words on you, I’ll let you choose to listen by coming here.

With that being said, the first thing I want to talk about is some pet peeves. One that I’ve had for a while is when perfectly able bodied people use the handicap button on doors. Especially when they go way out of their path to the door to do just push the button, or when they will slow down to a point where they almost stop, just so they don’t have to push or pull the door. How lazy can we get?

Now there are exceptions that make it ok for people to use the button. If you are under 10 years old or are carrying someone under 10 years old then it’s ok. If you are carrying something that is very difficult to hold on to. Bags don’t count. Unless you will have to pull on the door. If it’s a push and you have lots of bags in your hands, that’s not ok. Wheeling carts also makes it acceptable to push the button. Other than those few exceptions, if you can open a door on your own, please do.

A new pet peeve of mine that I’ve just developed this summer, is some people’s inability to judge the width of their vehicle. My line of work has me driving through lots of areas where there is construction happening and there are big trucks and machines and garbage bins lining the streets. But if you are in a Civic you don’t have to drive in the middle of the road to get by whatever is on the side of the road making it impossible or an extremely tight squeeze for people going the other direction. Even the street in front of my current dwelling is on the smaller side, but even with cars parked on both sides two average sized vehicles can get by no problem. While in my Highlander I drove by an older gentleman in an older Taurus with cars parked on both sides. After he saw I was not going to pull over and let him drive in the middle of both lanes he hit the brakes and I believe mouthed the words “FUCK YOU” or “WHAT THE FUCK?!?” (it was a couple of days ago and I can’t remember for sure, but he definitely dropped an f-bomb).

Ok, so I honestly wanted to stay away from plugging this on my blog. But I’ve been doing a lot of reading in various business books and online, and most of what I’ve been reading all leads back to this.

About a year ago I was introduced to Youth Juice (http://www.youthjuice.com/mlynch) and I was really excited about the product. The business opportunity also really intrigued me. So I got online and did a bunch of research, into the people involved with YJ, into the the claims the product was making, and into the whole network marketing practice. After a couple of days I decided to go for it. I paid about $400 to join and get my first 2 cases of YJ. I figured that I could risk $400 and if this did end up being a pyramid scheme I wasn’t out all that much.

Early on, I heard about all the quick paths to success people had achieved and I was really excited about that. But one thing that stuck in my mind was something my sponsor, the top earner in the company, had told me: “Believers will sell”. I didn’t believe right away. I couldn’t let my friends and family put their faith in me on something I didn’t believe in, or really have enough information about. A year later, I can now say I truly believe in YJ. I have noticed that my health is improved, it has drastically reduced my susceptibility to colds and flus, and I feel like I have less ups and downs with energy levels. The long term benefits are yet to be seen, but from what I’ve read I’m doing a lot of good.

On the business side of things, I have seen very little success, because I was not a believer. Not only did I not believe in the product, I was uneasy about the business model. After a couple of months filled of reading I am completely certain this model is not only great for money making, but for freedom. Authors and successful business men like Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad), Seth Godin (Purple Cow), and Michael Masterson (Ready, Fire, Aim) all relate their teachings for success back to ideas that are part of the YJ business. Kiyosaki even directly praises network marketing as an inexpensive and easy way to own your own business, while at the same time have access to training and experience that will help you in business for the rest of your life. Godin, a marketing expert, has stated the future of marketing and selling is told through authentic stories to small groups (face to face interactions of network marketing), not through mass media. Masterson really struck a note with me when he stated his 4 w’s of career satisfaction:

1. What you do.

2. Where you do it.

3. With whom you do it.

4. When you do it.

With YJ I get to do the fun stuff. I get to market and sell and interact with people. With Yj I can do it wherever I choose. From home, at school, at the gym, in Calgary or Saskatoon, wherever. With YJ I get to choose who I tell about it and who I want to bring on to my team. No more bad co-workers, I can only work with people I get along with if I choose. With YJ I can do it whenever I choose. If I have a few hours like right now, I can work on it, if not, no big deal.

I do not expect to become a millionaire with this. I expect to learn for my future entrepreneurial endeavors, and make some money along the way. I’ve learned more in the last 2 months doing this and operating another business and reading business books by business people than I did while I was getting my commerce degree. They can’t teach what you can only learn by doing.
